Personality:

Please note there are major spoilers for Cold Steel 3 here, as well as Ash's backstory.

To put things in simple teams, Ash is something of an interesting take on a troubled “bad boy” type character with a dark past. Interesting in that while he is definitely angry, and impacted by everything that has happened to him, he doesn't (knowingly or willingly, at least, if we ignore curse influenced actions) let it shape him into an unpleasant or dark person. He may have the attitude of someone who hasn't had an easy life, and a blunt manner of speaking and treating people, but he's a good kid at heart. A good kid who carved something out for himself that he wants to keep, and be allowed to enjoy, despite all the crap going on around him.

As his history shows, he had a... really terrible time as a kid. Orphaned at three in a situation he never got closure for due to a massive multi-state cover up operation that ended with all the obvious culprits dead and very few people for Ash to direct his anger to, he ended up far from his original home with a new parent and had to carve out a place for himself. His new parent, a young woman called Ellen, died of illness only eight years after taking him in, leaving Ash (then aged 11) alone again.

Luckily, he found a good niche for himself in his home town, and it shows in his personality, attitude and actions. Raquel is an entertainment city, full of casinos, bars and hostesses – heck, his adoptive mother was a hostess herself – and Ash grew up in the middle of it all. He shows a huge amount of “street-smarts” for his age, and it differentiates him from his classmates a fair bit. No one else in Class VII has a preference for seeking out entertainment districts for a good time, or a taste for alcohol like he does, for one thing. But he's also pretty astute when it comes to being tricked, or knowing when someone has ulterior motives in mind, and he has a wide breadth of knowledge presumably down to his own hobbies and reading. If he didn't get it from a book, he come from a tourist trap city where people get drunk and spill secrets on the regular. It's even a favoured destination of nobility, so it's unsurprising that Ash is fairly well versed on politics and some secrets that should have remained quiet but were drawn out by copious amounts of alcohol.

He's naturally a little bit suspicious and tends to rely on himself rather than other people. This does change over the course of the game, as he learns to trust and care about his teammates and relax enough to let himself help them without second guessing. For the most part though, he runs on instinct and tends to throw himself into situations that seem challenging or exciting with little thought. He tends to be conscious of getting other people involved though, and a few instances of him rushing in are a combination of thrill-seeking his own personal brand of justice. Prince of the nation shows up to challenge his schoolmate to a mech battle? Ash jumps in to help even the playing field. Son of a CEO harassing young ladies at a boarding school because he thinks his father's standing will protect him? Delinquents driving recklessly on country roads and putting people at risk with their driving? Ash'll get involved because he doesn't agree with them putting people at risk or lauding their power over vulnerable people. He has a strong sense of fairness, and right and wrong. He doesn't stand for people looking down their nose at others, or putting people at risk for their own selfish gains.

He's blunt and coarse without being cruel, and he's never intentionally mean during the course of the game. He's the first person to push the limits of a conversation and call people out if he feels they're being deliberately vague, or avoiding an inflammatory topic; but he doesn't take things to the point of plain cruelty. When he cares, he gets protective. And while he prefers to avoid sappy speeches and overly emotional actions, he'll sit through them if he has to – this is Ash, after all. He'd just get up and leave if he really didn't want to listen. He's one of the first people to ask Altina if she's okay after a scene in chapter 4 of the game, and he'll speak up to deflect antagonism onto himself if he senses someone is uncomfortable with a situation because he doesn't care if someone being an asshole is offended by his response.

He's a little like an angry puppy, really and he has a very caring side to him, under everything. He's just... pushed it down. Understandable, really – he's lost a lot over the course of his life, and when he finds other things important to him he does his best to honour them and stand up for them in the way they've done for him.

It helps that Ash is also a incredibly talented young man. Rean, his instructor in Class VII refers to him as a “ball of talent” during the course of the game, and he's not wrong. He's a powerful fighter, and is quick to pick up on strategy and plans. He doesn't have the level of pure technical and textbook skill of someone like his classmate Kurt, but his real life experience and lack of hesitation makes him something of a loose canon, but a powerful and deadly one when pointed in the right direction.

During the civil war in Erebonia Ash, who was only 15 at the time, gathered up a group of friends and formed a group called Fafnir. At the time the entire Empire was butting heads, and Raquel is located very close to a large noble-populated city. With no army protection available to Raquel at the time, Ash took up the job of keeping his home safe and spent the month countering attacks by opportunistic brigands and bandits. Fafnir was so successful that news of Ash's exploits made it back to the Bracer guilds and the Imperial Army, both of whom reached out to try and recruit him. However, he turned both of them down in favour of applying to Thors Military Academy; for his own personal reasons, as it turns out. He was told before applying that if he went to Thors he'd discover the truth behind the events at Hamel.

It's here that Ash gets somewhat complicated. He is a caring person, at his core, but he's pushed a lot of it down in favour of relying on himself over anyone else – but his time with Class VII gets to him, and softens out his edges over time. It's a change that becomes fairly permanent in the final game of the Erebonia arc, but make no mistake – Ash has a lot of anger inside of himself. He wears it more on his sleeve than other characters in the series too, enough that people comment on it, but no one really sees how deep it runs and how much he's carrying until it's too late.

Ash has a very specific reason for applying to Thors – linked to his past, Hamel, and the curse he isn't aware he's carrying. Tied into the story itself, there is a being that is able to take advantage of people's weaknesses and powerful emotions and “curse” the owner into acting in ways they wouldn't normally. In Ash's case, his curse manifested following the destruction of Hamel – the scene of his destroyed home town burned into his memory, and an ache in his left eye. Through this, he hears a voice telling him to “kill the vile one”. It's to this end that he enrols in Thors, having been told he'll find the answers he seeks there, and hoping to find a way to meet this “vile one” so he can put at end to the pain he's carried since Hamel.

Ash is a smart person. It's implied he downplays his actual intelligence a little, as he scores in the top 20 in the school exams in game and his classmate implies he “could have scored higher”. And he loves reading, stating he reads everything and anything, as even if the book sucks he'll have gained something from reading it. He even joins the literature club, genuinely because of his love of reading, and not just to avoid having to be on the school council. He isn't stupid. So when he finds himself handed a situation where he easily finds the Emperor, who he blames in a roundabout way for letting the events at Hamel happen, and he's conveniently found a gun that won't be picked up by security scanners he's suspicious. And rightly so. But he's also, ultimately, a kid who has been through too much. As he says himself: “tell me, who do I gotta kill to get rid of all this pain?”. He's a kid who's gone it alone for so long that even when he has people he can turn to help him, he isn't in the right place to let them in. He doesn't know how to shrug his burdens off and let someone else help him carry them, and even though he's shocked by what he's done in the next game, he isn't able or willing stop himself from being used by the Erebonian Curse and shooting the Emperor.

To summarise, Ash likes to put up a lone-wolf, tough guy act and does his best to keep people a certain amount of emotional space away from himself. Ultimately though, it is just that – an act. He's brash and reckless, and enjoys putting people on the spot, but he isn't selfish or uncaring. Quite the opposite. He's known for helping people out, defending people who struggle to do so themselves, and stepping in when he sees people doing something wrong. But he's also a young man who has carried burdens no one could have imagined without really letting on those burdens were ever there. It speaks volumes of his mental fortitude that he went 14 years without cracking under the weight of it, and only lost his control and strength when he thought he was about to free himself of all that weight and suffering. He's deeply angry at the world for the cards it dealt him, and perhaps even more so because he hasn't even had the luxury of moving on from his past in a natural, normal way thanks to the curse. Even though he sees his home as Raquel, and the life he lives now as his main one, he's not allowed to move on from Hamel and has been living 14 years in a sort of limbo between Ash Carbide, and Johan, the third survivor of Hamel. Which, frankly, is something no one deserves to deal with.

Abilities & Skills:

Ash hits things. He hits things hard. With a giant stick called a Varia Axe that combines an axe with the reach of a spear, coupled with a handy dandy scythe option and chain that further extends his reach. He know what his skills are, and they're set firmly in the “mighty glacier” section of the fighter types. He doesn't have the range of movement or evasion of his classmates, but when he does hit he hits with the force of a semi-truck.

His crafts are all physical ones, or geared towards priming himself to hit something even harder. Crafts are special abilities, generally unique to the user, that can used without combat-links or magic, or orbments. They split into two categories – regular ones, and S-Crafts, which are more powerful speciality attacks. Literally all of Ash's dish out physical damage, mostly to a wide array of enemies, and he has no crafts that focuses on healing the party or offering protection or elemental damage.

He does have access to an ARCUS unit and everything that comes with it – he can access combat links in battle that allow for better rounded teamwork with his link partner, using follow up attacks or covering abilities to support each other. His ARCUS also gives him access to Arts – elemental magic which represents the usual four elements (fire, water, earth and wind) plus three “higher” elements (time, space and mirage), which anyone can use but not everyone excels in. As mentioned, Ash's speciality is coming in like a semi and wrecking things, so unsurprisingly he doesn't have a natural proficiency towards Arts over physical attacks, but he does have a natural trend towards Fire and Mirage arts.

In non-fighting terms, Ash has a lot of “real world” knowledge. He's pretty shrewd and has seen a fair bit of the less than pleasant sides of life, so he tends to be slower to warm up to people and trust them, but he doesn't shut people out entirely. He just takes his time assessing things and drawing his own conclusions. He's usually aware when he's been played, and tends to be quick to pick up on when things aren't quite right or someone's purposely hiding something.

Ash grew up in an entertainment city with a hostess for a mother, and he enjoys all the things somewhere like Raquel has to offer. He knows how to sneak into bars underage, has entirely no problem admitting he likes a drink when he's very much underage, plays the card-game-du-jour of Cold Steel 3, Vantage Masters, and gambles at school. Sort of. Rean has wandered in on him destroying one of his classmates in a card game for a pin-up magazine, so. He can gamble, he can hold his drink, and he can probably beat you at a card game.

Choice: Witch

Reason: I've added Witch here mostly because Ash is so very anti-occult it would just be really funny. He's surrounded by occult happenings, and things that don't make sense and aren't caused by Orbal Technology, and Ash is still there playing Agent Scully and smashing the “doubt” button loudly and often.

It's less of a fear related reaction, and more down to the fact he just has a very low bullshit meter. Magic and occult things are complicated, often doomsday related and sound like a whole load of trouble so... Ash doesn't like them, and is happy to let people know that. Frequently. He's not the most magically inclined person in battle or in personal interest and skill, but he does care about his classmates a lot more than he really lets on. Towards the end of CS3, he's a little less subtle about how he tries to help and work with them when it's best to, and shows much more concern and care for them in his own abrupt way. He'd be the sort of person who would use magic to protect people and help them out, even if he would 100% just focus on the magic that lets him wreck things quicker.

He'll take something like three months to actually accept he can use magic let alone start to settle into learning it too, which would be GREAT and really fun for me to play out.
