[ just. noting that. but she's never been able to use it properly, neither with magic or in a fight. not. that she's ever tried the latter. ]
Mammon has been teaching me a little hand-to-hand, it's just a bit difficult for me to pick up. [ she's too squishy. ] Maybe the staff would make it easier.
[ so she's, uh, absolutely not expecting that!! with a startled yelp, she stumbles a few steps back, struggling to pull the staff up in front of her in time to catch it. and though she does catch it, the power behind it pushes her back another step.
so maybe she's not completely useless, but yeah. squishy. ]
[ the brat has a point. after making a mental note of it, she'll adjust her stance and tries to throw ash off, and maybe swing the staff at him like a bat. ]
[ now THAT’S more like it. The stance adjust is enough of a clue she’s gonna try something, but Ash still has to twist the pole of his axe in a slightly awkward way to block the swing of her staff. ]
Not bad.
[ there’s some force behind that. with another twist, ash plants the tip of the axe towards the ground and jabs the butt of the pole towards brilith. ]
[ the block doesn’t surprise her in the least - it’s that ash so easily adjusts and counters that throws her off. she’s not entirely sure how to deal with that kind of attack? so brilith moves on instinct to try to swat the axe to the side, but there’s no real strength to her little twig arms, so it doesn’t go that far. it’ll catch on her dress, just enough to make her lose balance and stumble. ]
[ ash reaches forward on instinct to catch her arm, dropping the axe down to rest on the ground again. ]
... Alright then. So, a little reflex work and some thinking on your feet. But you sure know how to swing that thing around. Defend yourself with it often?
[ she rights herself, and fixes her skirts before answering. ]
Not really, but I’ve watched someone else use it before. I was trying to do what they did. [ she does sound a little proud of herself for the compliment, though! ] It’s a little different, without magic to power it.
[ That's... yeah. Something. ] You can still smack someone around with a staff and cause some hurt, if you're wanting to keep them away from you. Blunt force can be dangerous though, so maybe try to disarm rather than take someone out completely.
My specialty is fire magic, as the priestess of fire. This staff is supposed to amplify it.
[ nodding! ]
...I hadn't thought of that. [ the. blunt force thing. ] Maybe I should try the knife instead, then... It might be easier, since I've used one before. But I thought it might be better to have some distance, since magic isn’t an option here.
I’m not saying you can’t use it for that, but you gotta know how hard you’re hitting if you do. You could smack someone upside the head and knock them out, or smash their skull in depend on force. [ how to avoid accidental murder, with Ash Carbide. ]
...
Or put your blade on a stick. [ he twirls the axe in his hands. it’s long, it has reach and it pointy. win, win, and win. ]
I mean. Killing someone would be a sign. Avoid that. But also it's just knowng the force of the swing. If you're bringing your arms right up over your head, and using all your might when you swing down, then you'll do more damage than if you reign it in. But you're also swinging wilder, so you might not even hit what you wanna hit.
[ he shrugs. and then taps his axe against the ground. ]
Technically this is just a sharp thing on a stick. Tie it pretty tight and you'll be fine.
It’s a spell - a basic one that enhances physical strength and defense.
Am I swinging too widely…? It would be easier if I could focus, but it’s hard to do that in the middle of battle… And I was never that great at last minute calculations.
[ brilith stares at the axe for a moment, as if considering the possibility, but eventually shakes her head. ]
I’m not sure it’s a good idea. Agni - the god I serve - he might be upset if I tried something like that. The staff is a part of him, so it’s a little personal.
Huh. We have some Arts like that back home. Gives you a boost for a bit?
It leaves you open. Look-- [ he hitches up the axe and hefts it over his head ]-- if I'm swinging like this, my whole chest is just wide open. Jab me in my ribs and you'd have a solid chance of bruising or breaking a rib.
[ ouchies. ]
... You serve a god and cart around a part of him as a staff. [ If he sounds incredulous, it's because he is. ]
That's right. It only lasts a short time, but it can make the difference in battle. It's one of the most common spells for the fighters of my world to use.
[ ...hm. she has a lot to learn, then. she makes a mental note and gives ash a nod. ]
Yes. That's what all god-level items are - items created from the god's own body to serve a specific purpose. Like I said before, the staff is meant to amplify fire magic, though I was still learning to wield it properly when we were brought here.
... Yeah, that sounds familiar. Strength, speed, defence boosts. We have them but they only last a bit.
...
That's kinda weird. You're literally holding a piece of a person? Like. We have shit the goddess supposedly "left behind", but ... [ Huh. ] Wonder if they feel it when you smack someone around with it.
no subject
[ huh. that's not what he was expecting. ]
What kind of fighting. Because I'm usually carting an axe the size of me. Everything else is necessity to not get my ass kicked first.

[ just. noting that. but she's never been able to use it properly, neither with magic or in a fight. not. that she's ever tried the latter. ]

[ Hm. ]
Sure. I guess it can't hurt. Is it about as big as you?

[ ... He nods. ]
Alright. I'll go get my axe and I guess you should meet me outside. Might as well crack on with it now.
no subject
[ do dee do, going to fetch a staff. she’ll head straight out to meet ash once she’s picked it up. say hello to the staff of agni. ]
It’s made for magic, but it should do fine in a regular fight, too.
no subject
He looks thoughtfully at the staff for a moment... before darting forwards and swinging his axe at her. Think fast Brilith. ]
